According ‌to The New York Times, the Justice Department’s⁣ Civil Rights Division is initiating ⁣a wide-ranging civil ⁤investigation of the Worcester Police Department after concluding that ⁤a pattern or practice of sexual ‌misconduct exists ⁢within‍ the department, which violates⁣ the constitutional rights of women.⁤ The⁢ investigation was ⁢spurred by a lawsuit ⁣filed in⁣ 2021 ⁣by the Alianza⁤ center for Economic and ‍Social Justice based on a two-year investigation into the department.

The department ⁢was also ‍accused ⁤of failing to adequately investigate reports of sexual misconduct, exacerbating the harm‍ faced ‌by victims.⁤ Victims of police sexual misconduct often encounter additional barriers ⁤when ⁤reporting ⁣abuse ‍due ⁢to police impunity⁤ and fear of‍ retaliation. The findings from the investigation have brought ‍to light the prevalence of sexual misconduct within⁣ the Worcester Police‍ Department and the need for comprehensive reforms to address this issue and protect⁢ the rights of women.
